If you ask a sourcing agent where China’s upholstered furniture comes from, the answer will be Foshan. Ask the people who actually cut the fabric and staple the webbing, and the answer narrows to one town: Longjiang, in Shunde District, where the entire supply chain for a sofa sits within a short truck ride of the loading dock.

We write this from the production floor of our factory in Longjiang, operated by Guangdong Aimigao Furniture Co., Ltd. under the Evergo Furniture Group. What follows is not a rehashed listicle. It is the guide we wish every overseas buyer had read before their first OEM order: how the local supply chain actually works, how to tell an export-grade manufacturer from an assembly shed, what the OEM/ODM process looks like stage by stage, and the five mistakes that cost importers the most money.

Why Longjiang Sits at the Center of China’s Upholstery Trade

Foshan is one of the largest furniture manufacturing regions in China, a city whose furniture industry grew alongside its steel, ceramics and appliance sectors over the past four decades (Foshan). Within Foshan, the furniture work is not evenly spread. Longjiang and its neighboring Lecong play different roles, and buyers who confuse them waste trips.

  • Longjiang is the production town. Frame carpentry shops, foam cutting services, spring and webbing suppliers, hardware vendors, spray lines and sewing subcontractors pack the industrial blocks. A single order can source kiln-dried hardwood, cushion foam and leg hardware without leaving the town’s road grid.
  • Lecong is the market town. Its exhibition malls display thousands of showrooms, which is where many overseas buyers first “meet” a supplier, often a showroom operator rather than the workshop behind the product.

This radius is the real moat. When a cutting table needs another roll of 40,000 Martindale fabric, or a pneumatic nailer breaks mid-shift, replacement happens the same day. That is difficult to replicate in a factory built far from the cluster, and it is a large part of why lead times here compress to 15 days for samples and around 30 days for mass production. China’s furniture export volumes flow through Guangdong ports in enormous quantity (UN Comtrade), and the majority of the upholstered share traces back to towns like this one.

For buyers, the practical takeaway is simple: a Longjiang address is a strong positive signal, but it is not a quality certificate. The town contains both the best and the worst of Chinese upholstery manufacturing.

Not Every Foshan Factory Can Handle Export OEM

Estimates of the number of furniture makers across Foshan run past three thousand, from brand-name groups to two-machine workshops. Only a fraction are genuinely equipped for export OEM/ODM work. Rather than counting factories, score them against five checkpoints we use when we evaluate partners ourselves:

  1. Own production floor, in-house frame carpentry. If the supplier outsources frames and only assembles, you have no control over the kiln-dried hardwood spec, joint reinforcement or moisture content.
  2. Dedicated sewing capacity. Count the lines, not the claims. A workshop running 12 sewing lines with a monthly output of 800-1,200 pieces can hold a schedule; a shop that “subcontracts everything” cannot.
  3. Export documentation fluency. Ask for a recent bill of lading (with commercial details masked) and a clear quote on FOB terms. Factories that ship weekly speak Incoterms without hesitation.
  4. Measurable QC. Look for a written 10-point QC program: frame stress testing, foam density checks, fabric abrasion reports, and a 100% pre-shipment visual inspection with a defect target below 0.5%.
  5. Engineering communication. A real OEM factory answers drawing questions with dimensioned feedback, not just “yes, no problem.” We commit to DFM (design-for-manufacturing) feedback within 48 hours, because ambiguity at this stage becomes a claim at destination.

If a supplier clears three of five, ask for a video walk-through. If it clears all five, book a visit. Our separate walkthrough of auditing an upholstery factory in Longjiang gives you the exact route and checklist.

The OEM/ODM Process From Inquiry to Container

Here is the sequence as it runs on our floor, which is broadly how serious factories in this cluster operate.

1. Inquiry and quotation

Send drawings, reference photos, target sizes, fabric direction and destination market. A competent engineer quotes a FOB price within 12 hours, with the assumptions written down: foam grade (we default to 45kg/m³-class cushioning), fabric grade, frame material and packaging method. A quote without assumptions is a discount waiting to disappoint you.

2. Sampling

The sample stage is where ODM projects are won or lost. Standard sampling takes about 15 days: frame build, foam lamination (fire-laminated foam where the destination market requires it), cover sewing from your selected fabric among 200+ options, and a finished photo set or shipped sample. Sample orders of 1-2 pieces are normal and expected.

3. PPS approval

The pre-production sample (PPS) locks everything: dimensions, stitching spec, fabric batch, cushion firmness, hardware finish. Both sides photo-document it and archive the spec sheet. When a dispute arises later, the PPS answers it in minutes.

4. Mass production

Typical lead time is 30 days for OEM quantities of 50-100 pieces per model. On the line, takt matters more than heroics: cutting patterns nest to maximize fabric utilization, sewing lines run balanced workloads, and assembly stations torque the frame hardware to spec, not to feel.

5. QC and loading

Every unit passes the 10-point check before cartoning, followed by a 100% pre-shipment visual inspection under consistent lighting; the working defect target is below 0.5%. Then the container: photo-documented loading sequence, carton counts matched to the packing list, seal number recorded. Loading discipline is part of quality, which is why we break down container loading math for sofa and bed orders in a dedicated guide.

Five Traps That Cost Buyers Real Money

Trap 1: Sample approved, production downgraded

The classic. Sample uses 45kg/m³ foam and heavyweight fabric; the container arrives with lighter everything. The fix is contractual: bind the PPS spec to the purchase order, require fabric batch records, and state that density and Martindale ratings are verified at inspection. A factory confident in its QC will accept this without drama.

Trap 2: Trading company posing as a factory

Sometimes a middleman quotes you from a leased showroom in Lecong while production happens three towns away. You pay a margin and lose direct control of engineering changes. Verification is straightforward: business license scope, a live video tour of the actual production address, and an unannounced visit to the workshop during your production window. We also publish seven remote checks for this, borrowed from our sister brand’s method at EvergoCasa, which serves premium residential buyers.

Trap 3: The lowest quote wins you nothing

Quotes that sit 15-20% below the cluster average achieve the gap by removing it from the product: thinner foam, unstitched double seams, non-kiln-dried frames. Price the spec, not the number. Two quotes are only comparable if they describe the same chair.

Trap 4: Verbal lead times

“Yes, 25 days, no problem” is not a schedule. Get the production calendar in writing: fabric and foam procurement week, frame build, sewing, assembly, QC, container booking. Factories with real line capacity commit to dates because they control the line; the rest stay vague.

Trap 5: Skipping inspection

Some buyers trust and skip pre-shipment inspection on later orders. Then one container out of four arrives with scuffed arms and crooked stitching. Run at minimum a final random inspection per shipment, or use the 100% visual standard we apply before anything is cartoned. If you cannot fly in, the third-party inspection section in our factory audit guide covers AQL sampling, report contents and realistic fees.

What Real Capacity Looks Like: The Evergo Group Benchmark

Numbers are the fastest way to separate factories from brochures, so here are ours. Neveitalia is produced by Guangdong Aimigao Furniture Co., Ltd., founded in 2006 as part of the Evergo Furniture Group. The group operates a 100,000 m² shared production base in Longjiang, Shunde, Foshan, staffed by 500+ craftsmen across product categories. Within that base, the Neveitalia upholstered workshop runs 12 sewing lines with a stable monthly output of 800-1,200 pieces.

The material anchors behind those numbers: kiln-dried hardwood frames, fire-laminated foam for regulated markets, 45kg/m³-class cushioning, fabric rated to 40,000 Martindale for contract use, and a fabric library of 200+ options. Commercial terms are equally explicit: wholesale orders start at 30 pieces (samples 1-2 pieces), OEM quantities from 50-100 pieces, quotation within 12 hours, DFM feedback within 48 hours, and payment by 30% T/T deposit with balance against documents; L/C at sight is negotiable for orders above USD 50,000.

We are not the only capable factory in this town, and this guide is not a pitch. It is the same framework we would use if we were sourcing. If you want to compare suppliers before committing, start with our honest, factory-profiled list of upholstered furniture manufacturers in Foshan, which includes our own plant with the same scrutiny we apply to everyone else. And if you source for high-end residential programs, our sister brand EvergoCasa operates the premium side of the same group.

FAQ

What MOQ should I expect from a Foshan upholstered furniture factory?

For wholesale (existing models), 30 pieces is a practical entry point in this cluster, with sample orders of 1-2 pieces before that. For OEM development, plan on 50-100 pieces per model to make tooling and pattern time economical.

How long does an OEM sample take?

About 15 days from confirmed drawings and fabric selection for a sofa or bed, including frame build, foam work and cover sewing. Complex mechanisms or custom hardware add time.

What is the difference between OEM and ODM in practice?

OEM means we manufacture to your drawings and specs. ODM means you adapt one of our existing platforms – change dimensions, fabric, cushion grade and details – which shortens sampling and reduces risk. Both run through the same quotation, PPS and QC gates.

How do I verify I am dealing with a real factory?

Three checks: a live video walk-through of the production address (not a showroom), the business license scope matched against the address, and an unannounced visit or third-party inspection during your production window.

What payment terms are standard?

30% T/T deposit with the balance before shipment is the cluster norm. Factories with export track records will also discuss L/C at sight, typically for orders above USD 50,000.
