A hotel sofa bed is two products in one frame: a sofa that survives daily lounge use and a bed that must not fail a guest’s one bad night. Specifying one without the other is how properties end up with sofas that look right and generate complaint tickets. This guide sets out the specification for hospitality sofa beds, from mechanism choice and mattress build to the cycle testing and arrival checks that keep both functions working by year 3.

Program terms run through our OEM and ODM furniture program, where sofa bed builds are quoted from a drawing set with the mechanism as a named component rather than an assumption.
Mechanism choice: the durability decision
3 mechanism families dominate hospitality builds. Fold-out metal action mechanisms carry a true mattress and suit properties where the bed function runs nightly; their hinge and bar geometry must be specified by cycle rating, because a leisure hotel and an airport transit hotel put different counts through the same frame. Click-clack and lift mechanisms suit limited-service rooms and lounges where the bed opens occasionally but opens fast. Pull-out trundle styles serve family configurations. Whichever family the project picks, the mechanism is the first part to fail when underspecified, so the RFQ should name the mechanism brand or cycle class and require the same mechanism across the delivery batch, not a shopping-list substitution mid-order.
The mattress: thin is a compromise you must size
Sofa bed mattresses run thin by geometry, commonly 9 to 14 cm, and the comfort engineering concentrates in that band: higher-density foams, optionally a pocket-coil micro unit in premium builds, and a cover fabric that survives both sitting and sleeping friction. Mattress size follows the frame, so the property’s linen program should be locked against the drawing, a pairing discipline covered in our mattress sizes guide and our upholstered bed sizes article. For hotels refreshing rooms, specifying the mattress density and fire-barrier requirements alongside the mechanism keeps the sleep surface from being value-engineered away during production.
Frame and suspension for dual duty
A sofa bed frame carries 2 load cases: static seating loads all day, then point and edge loads at night across a flat deck. Deck platforms need center support bars on any 2-seat width, locking legs that seat positively rather than friction-fold, and clearance geometry so bedding clears the mechanism path. Suspension under the seat section follows the graded webbing approach used in our contract seating, tuned for the flat position where guests actually lie. Frames from kiln-dried hardwood with metal mechanism mounting plates handle the dual load best; the mounting plate detail is where underspecified builds flex and squeak first.
Cycle testing and arrival checks
Two test layers protect the purchase. Pre-shipment, the mechanism runs through open-close cycles on the production floor with a recorded count, and the frame is load-checked at the deck center, the same inspection gates behind our quality control program, with third-party cyclic verification available through labs such as Intertek’s furniture testing services where the brand requires it. At arrival, the receiving team opens each sample unit, cycles the mechanism, checks deck flatness and photographs labels for the compliance file, the document pack aligned with our furniture certification overview for US and EU buyers. Properties fitting sofa beds into a broader room program can see the context in our quiet luxury minimalist upholstery work for hotels, and bed-only guest rooms pair with the ranges on our luxury mattresses line.

How to Check the Mechanism as a Named Component
A hotel sofa bed is verified as two duties, and the mechanism is the first. Identify which family is in the sample: a fold out action that carries a real mattress, or a click clack or lift used where the bed is occasional. The quote must name that family. Cycle it fully, open and closed, and listen for a hitch, a bar that rubs, or a lock that does not hold. Check the cycle expectation the order already states against any recorded test the factory provides. You are matching a named mechanism to a named duty, not approving a sofa that happens to unfold.
Then check the mattress that rides in it. Thinness is a compromise the article tells you to face, so confirm the build is the one specified, not a pad substituted after the sit felt fine. Lie on it as a guest would, and check that the sleeping surface is the surface you ordered. A mechanism that works and a mattress that was never specified is only half a pass.
How to Check the Frame, the Count, and the Arrival
The frame is doing two jobs. Check suspension and structure for both lounge use and bed use, and load the center of the deck the way the inspection already described in this article. If a lab count is part of the file, confirm the count belongs to this mechanism, not to a domestic sofa. Photograph the labels for the compliance file while the unit is open.
At arrival, the receiving check is a repeat, not a new design review. Open the sample unit, cycle the mechanism, look at deck flatness, and file the photos with the specification. Do this before the room is sold. The verification is complete when mechanism, mattress, and frame still match the named spec after travel. A sofa bed that only passes as a sofa has not been checked as the product this article specifies.
How to Separate a Sofa Pass from a Bed Pass
Score the two duties apart. The lounge pass is the seat used as a sofa: frame, suspension, and the daily sit. The bed pass is the mechanism cycled, the mattress that was specified, and the deck checked flat after the bed is closed again. A unit that is comfortable as a sofa and sticky as a bed fails. A unit that opens smoothly and was never specified as a mattress build also fails. Write both results. Do not merge them into one fine.
Receiving uses the same split. Cycle, look, and photograph before the room is released to a guest. If either duty misses the named spec, the sofa bed is not the product this article told you to approve.
Frequently asked questions
Which mechanism suits a limited-service hotel?
A click-clack or lift mechanism suits occasional-use rooms for speed and simplicity, while nightly-use rooms need a fold-out action specified by cycle rating with a named brand or class.
How thick should a hotel sofa bed mattress be?
Commonly 9 to 14 cm by frame geometry, with density doing the work in that band; premium builds add a pocket-coil micro unit. Lock linen sizes to the drawing before production.
What fails first on underspecified sofa beds?
The mechanism mounting and locking legs: underspecified plates flex under nightly opening, producing squeaks and misalignment. Mounting plates and center deck bars belong in the spec.
How do we verify the batch on arrival?
Open and cycle sample units, check deck flatness, photograph labels for the compliance file, and reconcile mechanism identification against the purchase order.
