The spring system is the structural core of a sofa’s seating comfort. It distributes body weight, provides rebound force, and determines how the sofa feels after years of daily use. For bulk buyers and hotel procurement teams, understanding the differences between pocket springs, zigzag (sinuous) springs, and other spring configurations is essential for writing accurate specifications and avoiding quality disputes.

The Three Main Spring Systems in Upholstered Sofas

Pocket springs (individually wrapped coils) consist of steel coils encased in individual fabric pockets. Each coil responds independently to pressure, providing zoned support that conforms to the body’s contours. Pocket springs are typically made from 14-gauge (2.0mm) or 15-gauge (1.8mm) tempered steel wire, with coil counts ranging from 200 to 400 for a 3-seater sofa. The fabric pockets are usually made from non-woven polypropylene or bonded polyester.

Zigzag springs (also called sinuous springs or no-sag springs) are formed from a single steel wire bent into a continuous S-shaped pattern. The springs run from the front rail to the back rail of the sofa frame, spaced approximately 70 to 100mm apart. Zigzag springs are typically made from 4.0mm to 5.5mm diameter spring steel wire. They are the most common spring system in mid-range sofas because they are cost-effective and provide consistent support across the seating area.

Drop-in spring units are pre-assembled grids of pocket springs that are dropped into the sofa frame as a single unit. They combine the comfort of individual pocket springs with the installation efficiency of a pre-assembled module. Drop-in units are common in European-style sofa designs and are available in standard sizes to fit common frame dimensions.

Comfort Comparison: How Each System Feels

Comfort is subjective, but there are measurable differences in how each spring system performs. The ISO 2439 standard measures firmness by testing the force-deflection relationship of a spring system under a standardized load.

Pocket springs provide the most body-conforming support. Each coil compresses independently, so when a person sits on one area of the sofa, adjacent coils are not affected. This reduces the “roll-together” effect where two people sitting close together slide toward each other. Pocket springs also produce less motion transfer, making them ideal for sectional sofas where one person may sit on one end while another sits on the other.

Zigzag springs provide a firmer, more uniform support. The continuous wire construction means that pressure on one area affects the entire spring row. This creates a “trampoline” effect that some users find bouncy. That said, zigzag springs are more consistent in feel over time — they do not develop soft spots the way individual pocket springs can when a single coil loses tension.

Durability and Expected Service Life

Spring durability depends on the wire gauge, the steel quality, and the number of compression cycles the system can withstand before permanent deformation occurs.

Pocket springs made from 14-gauge (2.0mm) tempered steel wire typically withstand 80,000 to 120,000 compression cycles before losing more than 10 percent of their original spring rate. At an average of 100 sit-downs per day for a household sofa, this translates to approximately 2 to 3 years of service before comfort degradation becomes noticeable.

Zigzag springs made from 5.0mm diameter spring steel wire typically withstand 150,000 to 200,000 compression cycles. Their longer service life is one reason they are preferred in commercial and hospitality settings where furniture must endure heavy daily use. The trade-off is that when a zigzag spring does fail (typically at a bend point where stress concentrates), the entire spring row must be replaced.

For quality assurance, specify the spring cycle test per BIFMA X5.1 or EN 1725, which requires a minimum of 100,000 cycles for commercial-grade seating. Request test certificates from your supplier showing the cycle count and the force-deflection measurements at 25,000, 50,000, and 100,000 cycles.

Cost Comparison for Bulk Orders

Spring system costs vary by configuration, wire gauge, and order quantity. For a standard 3-seater sofa frame (internal width approximately 190cm):

Zigzag spring system (5.0mm wire, 18 springs): $12 to $18 per unit. Pocket spring unit (14-gauge, 280 coils, pre-assembled): $28 to $45 per unit. Drop-in spring unit (standard size, 200 coils): $35 to $55 per unit.

The cost difference between zigzag and pocket springs is $16 to $37 per sofa. For a 500-unit hotel order, the total upcharge for pocket springs is $8,000 to $18,500. This is a meaningful cost difference that should be justified by the comfort and positioning benefits of the pocket spring system.

Noise Prevention: A Common Quality Issue

Spring noise — the creaking or squeaking that develops over time — is one of the most frequent end-user complaints. The noise comes from metal-on-metal contact at the points where springs connect to the frame or where adjacent springs touch.

To prevent spring noise, specify these requirements in your PO: all spring attachment points must have rubber or felt pads between the spring and the frame rail, pocket springs must have individual fabric pockets that prevent coil-to-coil contact, zigzag spring clips must be made from spring steel with a nylon insert to prevent metal-on-metal contact at the clip-to-rail junction, and the spring system must be pre-compressed during assembly to eliminate initial play.

Specifying Spring Systems in Your Purchase Order

Include these details when specifying the spring system for your sofa order: spring type (pocket, zigzag, or drop-in), wire gauge and diameter, coil count or spring count, spring cycle test standard and minimum cycles, noise prevention requirements, and the acceptable firmness range (force-deflection data at specified compression distances).

How to tell which spring is actually in the seat

Pocket, zigzag, and a drop in unit are different objects, and a spec that says springs is not a choice. Tip the sofa or open the deck on a sample you may spoil. A pocket unit is a set of cloth bags, each with its own coil. A zigzag is a continuous wire from the front rail to the back rail. A drop in unit is a grid that sits in the frame as one piece. If you cannot say which you are seeing, do not approve the feel of the cushion. The cushion can hide all three.

Sit, then have a second person sit beside you. On a pocket seat, your side should not throw the other person. On a zigzag, you will often feel the row move. Neither feeling is a moral victory. It is identification. Write which one you felt, and match it to the word on the order. A quote that prices a zigzag and a sample that is pocketed is a different sofa and a different cost.

Noise, the clip, and the page that has to match

The common failure is noise, and the check is the place the metal meets the frame. Look for a pad, a sleeve, or a clip that keeps wire off wood and wire off wire. A bare loop that can tap the rail will be a squeak after a season. Ask them to bounce the seat while you listen at the rail. A silent showroom and a noisy rail is a finding. Ask for the test page that names this system, and read the model words on it. A cycle result for a different gauge or a different layout is not this seat.

Put the spring word, the attachment word, and the model on one line in the order. Keep that line with the notes on the maker site. Stop if the second sample is a different system. A range that mixes pocket and zigzag under one name will produce two complaints that look like one mystery. Bounce the second sample at the rail before you accept it as the same build.
